Showtimes for Stag Theatre :
The Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra open their Autumn Classics concert with the rousing orchestral opening of Wagner's Die Meistersinger. Wagner's only comic opera, the overture features the stately, ceremonial masters' theme and the lyrical "Prize Song".
For the concerto the orchestra offer a firm favourite, the Cello Concerto by Antonin Dvorak. The orchestra are delighted to welcome back Liubov Ulybysheva, a thoroughly and musically assured musician who performs regularly with Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra.
The second half of this concert is Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2. Currently at no. 42 in the Classic fm Hall of Fame, this is a magnificent work which helped re-establish the composer's self-confidence as a symphonist. After the disastrous premiere of his First Symphony, Rachmaninov fell into a depression. He was very unhappy with the first draft of his Second Symphony but after months of revision he finished the work and conducted the premiere in 1908 to great acclaim.
