Kentish Opera is delighted to present a concert version of La Belle Hélne, for one night only. This is our first performance of this delightful, funny, and witty satire about the seduction of the beautiful but married Helen by the noble dare-devil prince, Paris, and the ensuing furore, which resulted in the legendary Trojan War – all of which was overseen by Greek gods! Jacques Offenbach's fabulous music of 1864 is perfect for this take on a legendary tale, which echoes his earlier work “Orpheus in the Underworld”, which we performed in 2009. Professional soloists and the mighty KO chorus will be supported on stage by a talented orchestra, under the expert baton of Robyn Sevastos, and we will sing it in English, translated from the original French of Meilhac and Halevy. Come and be entranced by this sparkling opéra bouffe, as audiences have since its first performance in 1864.

In the eight weeks between that first meeting and appearing on “A Song for Europe” on 11th March 1981, Bucks Fizz were hurled into a melee of rehearsing, recording, routining, styling, interviews and photography. The Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra open their Autumn Classics concert with the rousing orchestral opening of Wagner's Die Meistersinger. Wagner's only comic opera, the overture features the stately, ceremonial masters' theme and the lyrical "Prize Song". For the concerto the orchestra offer a firm favourite, the Cello Concerto by Antonin Dvorak. The orchestra are delighted to welcome back Liubov Ulybysheva, a thoroughly and musically assured musician who performs regularly with Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra. The second half of this concert is Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2. Currently at no. 42 in the Classic fm Hall of Fame, this is a magnificent work which helped re-establish the composer's self-confidence as a symphonist. After the disastrous premiere of his First Symphony, Rachmaninov fell into a depression. He was very unhappy with the first draft of his Second Symphony but after months of revision he finished the work and conducted the premiere in 1908 to great acclaim.
