Theatrical production of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion

George Bernard Shaw's ‘Pygmalion' famously evolved into a 1956 Stage Musical, then the 1964 Musical Film ‘My Fair Lady.

Set in 1912, the play opens in Covent Garden, where Cockney Flower Seller Eliza Doolittle is unwillingly and unwittingly analysed by Phonetics Professor, Henry Higgins; the Sherlock Holmes of deciphering accents. Higgins and his friend Colonel Pickering make a bet to turn Eliza into a ‘creature' speaking so beautifully she could pass for a Duchess at an Embassy Ball.

We have composed scenes to generate more insight into the characters whilst remaining faithful to Shaw's original idea. Shaw's Eliza differs from the later interpretations but is nonetheless an interesting insight and commentary on social class, personal transformation, language and identity, that still resonates today.

For context, ‘Pygmalion' was a Greek Mythological Sculptor who created an ivory statue depicting the ‘perfect woman' and falls in love with his creation, with obvious parallels.
